North Durham never seems to run short of interesting people, whose stories deserve to be told. Each month brings new introductions and accomplishments, but this time, the decision required no debate. A newcomer has made quite an impression, and her presence has quickly become familiar.

Misty Santos, the Executive Director of the North Durham Chamber of Commerce, has stepped into her role with purpose and drive. Overseeing a membership of 250 businesses across Scugog, Uxbridge, and Brock, Misty has taken on a job that carries its share of expectations.

Chambers of Commerce in Canada serve as advocates for local businesses. They organize community events, and provide a platform for business owners to connect. Our Chamber has been responsible for the Santa Claus parade, last year's Beer Fest, and a number of other community gatherings. Behind these events are hardworking individuals, and now at the helm, is Misty.

Originally from the Manchester area in the U.K., Misty (born Teresa), set out on her journey at the age of eighteen. Tending bar in local pubs through high school provided a start, but it did not keep her rooted to home. An opportunity came from a friend in New York who offered her a nanny position. Her parents and sisters saw the value in the experience, and supported her decision.

New York proved overwhelming. The fast pace and high cost of living, pushed Teresa to seek another path. She applied to several universities, and was accepted by Cleveland College in Ohio, where she graduated with honours.

While attending school, she worked in daycare. It was here that her name began to change. The children had difficulty with ‘Miss Teresa,’ and began calling her Miss "T," which quickly became Misty. The name stayed with her.

Gaming had always interested her, and through online communities, Misty connected with someone from Oshawa. Their connection deepened over time, and once her studies were complete, she moved to Oshawa to meet him in person.

She settled into the community and worked with several not-for-profit organizations. When her son Sam was born, Misty turned her attention to the fitness world. She opened a studio in Brooklin, then expanded to a larger facility in Whitby and her work in personal training gained momentum.

Her experience in business led to new ventures. She developed a coaching and marketing company tailored for service-based industries. Her efforts culminated in a book, "How to Be a Thick Skinned E-Mail Marketer," which is available on Amazon. The publication brought new attention and widened her audience.

Misty soon found herself sought after for her skils in organizing events, building membership, and offering practical guidance to those running small businesses. Her experience has taught her how critical it is to be prepared. "One third of Canadians are unable to handle an unexpected five-hundred dollar expense," she remarked. Her goal has always been to help others build something sustainable.

Now leading the North Durham Chamber, Misty has embraced the opportunity to use her strengths to support others. With her team, she works to strengthen the business community, while also encouraging personal and professional development.

She recently was asked to present a Ted Talk, a short, impactful presentation that shares knowledge and ideas, typically focusing on Technology, Entertainment, and Design (TED), but encompassing a wide range of topics. These talks are delivered at TED conferences or TEDx events, and are known for being engaging and thought-provoking. Misty’s presentation was successful and very well received.

She now lives in Scugog, where she has found a sense of belonging. Her family has followed her lead. Her husband and children welcomed her mother from the United Kingdom, inviting her to settle with them in their new home.

Misty Santos has quickly become part of our fabric. With her leadership, the Chamber has taken on new life and remains a valuable part of our business community. If you wish to learn more about the North Durham Chamber of Commerce, their website can be found at scugogchamber.ca.
