The Nutty Chocolatier

Gotta Love Chocolate

Chocolate has always held a special place in my heart. It is a treat I can never resist, and one I find myself enjoying at any given opportunity. Naturally, I am thrilled to have the Nutty Chocolatier in our picturesque little town. I have always wondered how we managed such a boutique establishment, and we all know it is due to Ken Koury.

Ken was born in Kirkland Lake, a mining town in northern Ontario. His father worked in the mines, while his mother cared for Ken and his siblings. The family’s roots trace back to Lebanon, with Ken’s grandparents immigrating to Montreal. From a young age, Ken demonstrated a strong work ethic. By six, he had taken on a paper route, and before entering high school, he was pumping gas at a local station. At nine, the family moved to Sudbury, where his father found greater opportunities.

Later, the family relocated to Toronto, where Ken’s father found success in real estate. Around this time, Ken faced the loss of his mother, just as he was completing high school. Determined to succeed, he pursued higher education, attending York University and Teacher’s College. Ken went on to teach science, business, and industrial arts, focusing on innovative methods to inspire creativity in his students. His teaching career spanned fifteen years before he decided to explore new opportunities.

Through his father’s real estate connections, Ken purchased and renovated a dilapidated house, marking the start of a successful venture into property management. Eventually, Ken and his wife Joanne, along with their two sons, made their way to Port Perry. A chance encounter with a barber in Toronto led to an opportunity to establish a contracting business in the town. Every day at lunch, Ken would walk from his office on North Street to Kurtz Deli (now That Place on Queen), and noticed the building next door, a folk art store, was for sale. Ken contacted the owner, and after some negotiations, he owned the building.

Determined to create a unique candy store, Ken spent months researching and preparing. He opened his first store in 1988, offering fine Belgian chocolates, and a selection of candies. Over time, he expanded to other locations and began manufacturing his own chocolates to maintain the highest standards. Each chocolate undergoes a meticulous process to ensure perfection, and only flawless products make it to the shelves.

Today, the Nutty Chocolatier is a cherished destination, known for its quality and charm. Whether you are craving a sweet indulgence or nostalgic treats, a visit to 182 Queen Street in Port Perry is a delightful experience.
