I Know Where You Are

Car thefts are on the rise in Canada, as well as other nations in the world, and many companies are finding solutions to help in the fight against crime.

Apple is doing its thing, by offering the new AirTag, a small disc, about the size of a loony. It connects to an app and allows you to see its location at any time. Now to me, this is one of those great ideas that seldom come along.

I can see using this when I travel and tossing one in my suitcase. That way, when my luggage goes to San Francisco and I’m on a flight to Madrid, I will be able to track the luggage (of course it doesn’t mean I will get it any faster, but at least I’ll know where it is).

One great use for these AirTags, is to hide one in your car. The first thing thieves do when they steal a vehicle, is to dismantle the GPS so they can’t be tracked. If you have one of these Tags hidden somewhere in your car, they will never find it, and you will be able to know exactly where your vehicle is.

Of course, typically, with every good thing there is a bad thing. It now seems that bad people are buying these disks and slipping them into your car in a busy parking lot. Within the gas cap area, stuck under your bumper or anywhere else. They then trace your vehicle and follow until you have parked somewhere secluded or where you may be a long time. Then they simply break into your car and drive off with it.

Apple however, is one step ahead, and they have now come out with an app which tells you that you or your car is being tracked. One more thing for me to be aware of.

Maybe I will just walk everywhere, but of course someone can easily slip one of those tags into my coat and know that I’m away from my house. I remember being concerned years ago about big brother watching everything I do. Today I would be happy if it was only big brother watching me, but it seems it is everyone everywhere.
